There’s something magical about Japanese kites. 🪁✨ Made from washi paper and bamboo, they are decorated with ink paintings, with the designs often inspired by ukiyo-e prints and featuring famous kabuki characters.

Historically, kites were used as symbolic offerings of thanks in ceremonial Buddhist practices. Nowadays, they are flown to celebrate the coming of spring, during special New Year’s events or at festivals such as the annual Sanjo Great Kite Battle (Ika Gassen) in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture each June.
