Matsushima Bay is one of Japan’s 3 most scenic views along with Miyajima and Amanohashidate and it’s not hard to see why. The bay, dotted with over 200 small islands covered in pine trees, has mesmerised Japanese people for hundreds of years.

Commonly visited in summer, Matsushima Bay instead takes on a whole new look in winter after heavy snowfall, where the islands and their pine trees are blanketed by the fresh snow. Make sure to visit the free Godaido Hall, cross the 250m bridge onto Fukuura Island and finish with a 1 hour cruise around the bay.

The Matsushima area is also famous for oysters, in particular you shouldn’t miss out on trying the local all-you-can-eat oyster challenges! Check out my attempt here!

How to get to Matsushima Bay:
1. Nearest large city with Shinkansen and airport is in Sendai
2. From Sendai, take the Senseki Line to Matsushima Kaigan (40mins, 860 yen)
