Kanazawa Castle used to be the’ residence of samurai lord Mayeda family, the governor of Kaga Domain, present Ishikawa prefecture. After the end of samurai period it turned into the ground of Japanese army bases. Since 1949 it had been the site of Kanazawa University, that was Japan’s only one university surrounded by castle stone walls. After it was relocated to the suburb of Kanazawa, castle buildings were restored. Kanazawa Castle Park opened to the public in 2001.
