Trivia: In this video, I said “Many illumination events have been voluntarily cancelled.” I purposely used the word “voluntarily” because I thought it was the word to reflect our way of thinking and the current Japanese society. I’ve heard a word “quarantine” pretty often in foreign news since the spread of COVID19. But an interesting thing is that we don’t use the word in Japan as often. We use a word “自粛” (pronounced “jisyuku”) instead. 自粛 means “to refrain from doing something with your own judgement”. I heard foreign people often say “We need to stay home because we are in quarantine.” but in Japan we say “We need to say home because we are in 自粛”. This simply implies that “Considering the impact to the society, we have decided to stay home with our own judgement.” I think It’s because our government doesn’t have such strong power to oder and force people to shut down everything and make us stay home. It can only ask people to cooperate with the government under the current law. Nobody orders or forces us to stay home or shut down the business. We have to be the one to decide wether or not we should cooperate with the government. This is the reason we like to use the word 自粛 for almost anything from quarantine to cancellation of an illumination event. And now we are talking about another 自粛 of not going back to hometown for the holidays.
