Asahiyama Zoo is located in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, and it is the northernmost zoo in Japan. Over 650 animals of about 120 types are healthily bred.
There are many enclosures, such as popular “Seal House” where seals swim vertically through a pillar-shaped tunnel and “Orangutan House” where you can enjoy observing orangutans stroll 17m in the air.
Enclosures are being built to enable animals to move around freely in semi-natural environment which allows visitors to see them moving, swimming, and fling up close.
Asahiyama Zoo has attracted attention by introducing “behavior exhibition”. It shows animals’ activity and daily life and is rare for zoo in Japan.
By reason of its unique way of exhibiting, it is one of the popular sightseeing spots in Hokkaido where many tourists visit, not only from within Japan but also from overseas.
The specialties in the zoo are exhibitions of northern species such as amur leopards and polar bears, and animals living in Hokkaido such as Hokkaido brown bears and red foxes.
Other than popular animals like penguins and polar bears, many animals are exhibited, such as Monkey Mountain, rhinos, giraffes, raptors, reptiles, and birds.
