The Kitakyushu Monorail is featured in this behind-the-scenes documentary, produced by R.K.B. Motion Pictures Co. Ltd. shortly after the system opened in 1985. Titled ‘Pathfinder of Urban Mass Transit-The Kitakyushu Monorail System, Kokura Line,’ the promotional film documents many features of the Hitachi-built system. It was the first Alweg-type monorail in the world to feature flat-floor trains. All earlier Alweg monorails had protrusions into the passenger cabins which covered bogies below. The result of raising the floor was a rather boxy, arguably unattractive train. It’s not the sleek, futuristic look seen at Disney parks and elsewhere, but several later Hitachi flat-floor monorails have vastly improved the design of their trains. In 1988 the system was extended downtown into the multi-modal Kokura Station. Passengers can transfer there between Shinkansen bullet trains and other local trains to the 8.8-kilometer monorail.
