If you are looking for a perfect day trip from Kyoto, I definitely recommend Mount Koya. You will have to wake up a bit early if you decide to take a regular train, but at least you will get to see a beautiful sunrise. We left Kyoto around 5am. The train right there took us around 3 hours. Then we followed the path of the pilgrims and visited all the wonderful places of Mount Koya. The pilgrimage trail took us around 4 hours. During these four hours, we walked through a peaceful forest with Buddha statues lying here and there. Here is the list of places you should not miss:
1. Daimon Gate
2. Konpon Daito Pagoda at the Garan temple complex
3. Kondo Hall at the Garan temple complex
4. Kongobu-ji Temple and Stone Garden
5. Okunoin Cemetery
ENJOY!
