Gijón (in Asturias Xixón ) is a municipality and city Spanish , with historical category of village , located on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea , in the Principality of Asturias , autonomous community of which it is the municipality ‘s most populous, with 271,780 inhabitants ( INE , 2019).

Gijón is also a parish of the council, whose only singular population entity is the homonymous town, and is known par excellence as the capital of the Costa Verde . It is the capital of the maritime province of Gijón by Royal Order of July 30, 1845. The Camino de Santiago runs through the city on its coastal route , declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco .

Geographically it is located in the central-northern area of Asturias , 28 km from Oviedo and 26 km from Avilés , forming part of a large metropolitan area that includes twenty councils in the center of the region, structured with a dense network of roads, highways and railways and with a population of 835 053 inhabitants in 2011, making it the seventh in Spain . It is located in the central part of the Cantabrian coast , in the southern part of the Atlantic Arc .

Since its foundation until recently, it had been an eminently industrial town, which favored its great development and growth during the 20th century . However, in recent years the crisis in the steel industry and the naval sector has led to the reconversion of its productive fabric, which has transformed the city into an important tourist, university , commercial and R + D + i center .

In the council they are based the Advisory Council of the Principality of Asturias , the Radio Television of the Principality of Asturias and Centro Integral Maritime Safety of Maritime salvage .
