I learn a lot in my travels, though sometimes through misadventures many of which happened over the course of this trip.
1. While deer are considered polite and wonderful to visit in Nara the ones on Miyajima island will steal any food. Guard your food and valuables well. They will jump on you if you’ve got food or anything they want. (Thankfully they’re light.)
2. Summer in Japan in brutal. To be a tourist during this time and explore can be exhausting. Take breaks, drink ionized water, don’t push yourself too hard. There’s so many ways to stay cool in Japan in the summer, but still be mindful of your health and stay hydrated. Also sunblock is a must.
3. USJ (Universal Studios Japan) can get packed. That should be obvious but if a line leaves the gates of the ride it’s too long. If it continues and spills out to the nearby area don’t even think about it. The lines are usually outside in the sun with nowhere for you to get water, or refill a bottle, and no easy way to leave once you’ve been in line for a long period of time…We waited 3 hours. It was all we managed to do for the day. It was a huge waste and especially frustrating when the line was gone once we exited the ride.
Do you have anything you’ve learned from travel misadventures?
