In 2019, due to the emperor’s abdication, Japan had a special 10-day Golden Week. During this long holiday, I visited local areas as well as far.

Every year, there is the Shibazakura Festival in Chichibu, Saitama. Even though I live in Saitama, Chichibu is still 2 hours away by train because it is in the countryside. The flowers bloom only for one week at the end of April and early May, which just so happens to be Golden Week. We went on the mascot day, and were able to meet the one and only Potekuma in person!

Then, I traveled to Nagasaki, which is on the southernmost island, Kyushu. During Japan’s isolation period, this was the only port open to the Western world. The Dutch traded with Japan during the Edo period, and there are still remnants of the Dutch influence today; the Dutch quarter in Nagasaki city and Huis Ten Bosch, the Dutch theme park which is 2 hours away from Nagasaki city.
