2 Sep – 23 Sep 2019 – Japan Adventure
Before embarking on our big backpacking adventures, Shizu and I decided to start our trips together in Japan! First stop was to climb Japan’s highest volcano – Mt Fuji @ 3,776m! You are only able to summit this volcano 2 months each year and was certainly the highlight of our trip! Above the clouds and watched the best sunrise of our lives!!
After we make our way back to the big smoke of Tokyo and visit the many sights of the city including racing around in Mario Karts!! A very fond childhood memory of mine! We head out into the wilderness for some much needed rest and relaxation in Kamikochi National Park. Away from the big lights and noise, we camp for a few days in the tranquility of natures creations.
We bullet train it to Osaka, the city where Shizu’s family is from, and got to stay with her obaachan (grandmother), staying in a traditional Japanese apartment and was treated to some delicious homemade cooking! We explore the hustle and bustle of the city and eat the best food Japan has to offer! We even make a day trip out to Kobe and have the world’s best renowned beef in its home town – Kobe Beef! The most expensive steak I’ve had by far at $122 for 180g.
Next stop we head into Kyoto and it is here we visit all the famous tourists sites of Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Nara Deers, and the many picturesque temples around the city. We also head out for a day trip to Hiroshima. You really feel the devastating effects first hand of WW2 in this city in 1945.
Last stop we head south to the islands of Okinawa and Ishigaki. Always need to end a trip on the islands! We meet Shizu’s Okinawan friend Erichan, who takes us around her island. We then fly to Ishigaki where we end the trip with our first and only dive together!
A quick 3 week adventure through Japan, we say our goodbyes and part ways as I make my way to South America for the next 5 months and her in South East Asia!
