Japan’s food scene can be overwhelming especially for first time visitors so we’re sharing our favourite must try Japanese fast food restaurants to help you know what to keep a look out for when you just want a guaranteed delicious meal that won’t break the bank.
From Ichiran’s famous smooth creamy tonkotsu ramen to Coco Curry’s dreamy Japanese curry, get ready for the best fast food Japan has to offer.
FYI you can find all these fast food chains across Tokyo and other parts of Japan too.
We kick this episode off with a quick visit to pick up one of the most heavenly desserts. Ichigo Mochi with cream aka a strawberry mochi from Niniki. The original shop is in Kyoto but we stumbled across a branch right at Gotanda station in Tokyo much to Peter’s delight.
When talking about fast food and ramen in Japan, there’s one name that most people are familiar with, and that’s Ichiran. Ichiran to this day remains our favourite ramen restaurant of all time in Japan.
Ichiran has branches all over Japan and in other countries too although you just can’t beat having Ichiran ramen in Japan itself where it originated from. The lines for almost every Ichiran ramen restaurant can stretch pretty long so it can be a bit of a wait, but in our opinion, it’s totally worth it.

Next up we visit a Japanese fast food staple for any time of the day. Tasty, fast and afforable is Yoshinoya’s motto which they definitely live up to. There are many fast food restaurants in Japan similar to Yoshinoya (like Sukiya and Matsuya) that are also famous for serving beef gyudon (beef rice bowls) however Yoshinoya remains our favourite of the three.

Nearby Yoshinoya is a Japanese fast food chain we only recently found out about called Freshness Burger thanks to our mate Nick. It’s quickly became a fast food favourite for us in Japan though for their super fresh tasty burgers.

Last but not least, one of the greatest Japanese curries and a must-have on every trip we make to Japan (especially if we’re in Tokyo), Coco Ichibanya Curry House or Coco Curry for short. Similar to how at Ichiran you can customise your ramen to your liking, at Coco Curry you can customise your curry dish to your liking too. With an extensive menu, there’s a Japanese curry dish sure to satisfy everyone.
