In the dense rainforest of the Western Region National Park, the founder of Sri Lankan national Bala created the Tacugama Chimpanzee Nature Reserve, covered with leaves and surrounded by a waterfall to rescue and rehabilitate endangered primates. Passionate and dedicated staff offer guided tours of the sanctuary twice a day, watching rescued chimpanzees roam the paddocks and search for those who have been released into a vast mountain area.
King Bruno: Chimpanzee: A story of tragedy and hope
In 2006, Bruno fled the Tacugama chimpanzee sanctuary in Sierra Leone, the dominant alpha man. With 31 other chimpanzees, he disappeared into the forest. After the leak, rumours and stories about Bruno spread. Bruno has never been caught.

Note:
Sanctuary provides ONLY two tours everyday @10.30am & 16.00hrs (Not between). So be on time!

Route and Fare:
Tacugama is located on Regent / Bathurst Road, a 30-minute drive from Freetown. A private taxi costs around 30,000 Leone’s to get you from Freetown. Plus it’s worth paying for them to wait for you, for the return journey back to Freetown.
