Miyajima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea. It is about 20km from Hiroshima. Miyajima is rated as one of the most scenic places in Japan. Miyajima is home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine aka “the floating shrine” and its grand gate the Otorii. These were the focus of our visit, but there are many more reasons to come here including: Mt. Misen including its virgin forest, shrines and temples; Daishoin Temple, Senjokaku Palace; Daiganji Temple; and the old town area.
We reached Miyajime via tram from Hiroshima (about 45 minutes) and then JR Ferry across the bay (about 10 minutes). Miyajima can also be reached by taking the JR Sanylo line out of Hiroshima and then the ferry, or by taking a ferry direct from Hiroshima.
We stayed at the Hotel Miya Rikyu. Great traditional style. Food and onsen were wonderful. After the evening meal the hotel had a Taiko drum performance, and then we walked around town in our yukatas and geta. It was a magical evening! NOTE: It’s difficult to get a room on the island so plan well ahead of your trip.
