Japan Travel: Onsen in the Summer, Foot Bath in the Winter at Shirasuna Onsen, Wakayama 27
Shirahama, located along the Pacific Ocean coast in Wakayama Prefecture, is famous for its beach and onsen (hot spring). Shirahama literally translates to “white beach” which refers to the 500 meter long sand beach this city boasts.
In addition to the beach, Shirahama is blessed by an abundance of hot springs. This region is known as the one of the top three onsen (hot spring) resorts in Japan, rivaled by Atami on the Izu Peninsula and Beppu in Kyushu.
Shirasuna is popular onsen (hot springs) located next to Shirahama Beach. In the summer, many swimmers can brush the beach sand from their bodies and enter the onsen. In the winter, this facilities foot bath is quite popular.
Another reason Shirasuna is famous is the large bath with a capacity of 100 people. Bathers must wear a bathing suit as the beach pedestrians can see the bath. Also, this bathing suit wearing onsen is not gender separated so everyone can enjoy bathing together!
