Japan Airlines (JAL) has ordered 26 Embraer E190-E2s aircraft, comprising 16 firm orders and 10 options, with deliveries expected to begin in the 2029 financial year. JAL has selected the Embraer E190-E2 to replace the existing Embraer E170/E190 regional fleet operated by its subsidiary J-AIR, which serves an extensive domestic network from its main hub at Osaka International Airport (Itami).

The introduction of the E190-E2 forms a key part of JAL Group’s long-term strategy to maintain a sustainable domestic network amid declining business demand, demographic changes and rising operating costs. The aircraft’s advanced engines and wing design offer improved fuel efficiency, reduced CO₂ emissions and lower noise levels compared with previous-generation aircraft. Its reliability and durable components are also expected to reduce maintenance costs, supporting JAL’s efforts to improve operational efficiency, strengthen regional connectivity and minimise environmental impact.

Mitsuko Tottori, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of JAL, welcomed the introduction of the Embraer E190-E2 to the airline’s fleet, highlighting the aircraft’s improved environmental performance and economic efficiency. “In the future society envisioned under the “JAL Group Management Vision 2035,” the domestic network serves as vital social infrastructure supporting local economies and everyday life across Japan. Through the introduction of this aircraft, we will maintain and develop a sustainable air network for the next generation, contributing to the future of Japan. We look forward to offering our customers a new and even more comfortable travel experience in the skies.”
