The OSAKA Most Tourists DON’T Visit (Yet)
There’s so much more to Osaka than Dotonbori. In this video, I explore 5 Osaka neighbourhoods most tourists don’t visit. From hidden Showa-era alleyways and incredible street art to local food districts and some of the most unique streets I’ve discovered in Japan.
After visiting Osaka for more than 10 years, I wanted to find the other side of Osaka, the places where local culture still thrives away from the biggest tourist crowds. So we’re heading beyond the usual Osaka itinerary to explore Kitakagaya, Nakazakicho, Noda, Fukushima and Kyobashi.
We’ll hunt for huge murals and art installations in Kitakagaya, explore the retro cafés and independent shops of Nakazakicho, and search for one of the most genuinely hidden places I’ve ever found in Osaka: a tiny Showa-era maze of bars in Noda known locally as “Death Valley.”
Then, as night falls, we head to Fukushima to discover why locals recommended it as one of Osaka’s best areas for food, before finishing amongst the neon, standing bars and after-work crowds of Kyobashi.
If you’re planning a trip to Osaka and want to experience something beyond Dotonbori, Osaka Castle and the usual tourist attractions, these are some of my favourite places to discover a completely different side of Osaka.
Places featured: Kitakagaya (北加賀屋) • Nakazakicho (中崎町) • Noda (野田) • Fukushima (福島) • Kyobashi (京橋)

I have been to Kyobashi in april 2025 and really loved it. During the two weeks we had Osaka as a home base, we went to Kyobashi 4 times. If you want solid Japanese busy vibe, without the tourists, go to Kyobashi. I am planning to visit Nakazakicho this time around. The others I never visited or had my eyes set on and that is probably because they are in an area that never gets any attention. Very interesting 🙂
I love it! Now you are finally seeing my Osaka. I love the Showa era and all of these places are great. You missed Tokui cho
Perfect timing.. going in 2 weeks and half of our Osaka stay is not decided yet
That small alley is so cool… this is the embodiment of "hidden in plain sight"
Brilliant episode — thanks so much for sharing these finds! Gives me a reason to go back to Osaka again and dig deeper!
I've been to Osaka a couple of times, but mostly the touristy area of the city. All these areas would interest me. Death Valley looks really cool. Reminds me of where I'd find The Midnight Dinner, only in real life instead on TV.
Nice video. Me like.
"Gritty" the perfect word I use too when explaining Osaka's appeal. The retro beatnik edge to Osaka is its charm, and the lesser number of introduced big-brand international food establishments in Osaka has kept a more traditional raw and authentic feel to the city than Tokyo.
Just visiting one of Osaka's own SUPER TAMADE supermarkets is a startling unique contrast to anywhere else in Japan and screams Osaka as you walk in the door.
Osaka never fails to surprise and this video is evidence that there's something new and exciting for everyone to discover.
Well put together vlog 💪
