Beautiful alternative to Kyoto that is stubbonly under the radar

Wandering the Chaya districts

Kyoto has the famous Gion district, but Kanazawa has three beautifully preserved chaya (teahouse) districts of its own: Higashi Chaya, Nishi Chaya, and Kazuemachi.

Higashi Chaya is the largest and most famous. Walking down its central pedestrian street feels like stepping onto a period film set. Two-storey wooden teahouses line the lane, their slatted windows designed so patrons could look out without being seen from the street.

During the Edo period, these districts were exclusive entertainment zones where wealthy merchants were entertained by geisha performing traditional dances and playing the shamisen. Today, many of these buildings have been converted into chic cafes, artisan boutiques, and museums, though a handful of exclusive teahouses still operate. Unlike the packed streets of Gion, you can actually take your time here, soaking in the atmosphere without constantly dodging selfie sticks.
