Hello, Friends!

Today, we are walking in Hiroshima, Japan. Hiroshima is globally known for the tragic events of World War II; but today it is a thriving cultural and economic hub.

Hiroshima was founded in 1589 as a castle town on the Ōta River delta. It was transformed into a major urban center and industrial hub in 1868 Meiji Restoration. The city became a target for this experimental atomic bomb because it was a major military and industrial center, an embarkation port, and had not yet been damaged by conventional air raids, which allowed the U.S. military to clearly measure the destructive power of the atomic bomb.

On August 6, 1945, 8:15am, the city became the first city in history to be targeted by an atomic bomb. The blast obliterated the city, causing massive loss of life. 70,000 lives were lost immediately in the blast and hundreds of thousands more following from injuries and effects of radiation.

Following the war, Hiroshima was meticulously rebuilt. Rather than erasing its painful past, the city built Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum. While controversial, the city chose to preserve the memory of the event to advocate for global nuclear disarmament and lasting world peace.

This walk takes us through the Peace Memorial Park, the Hiroshima Castle and modern shopping district of Hondori.
