After weather delays and a previous engine-related setback, Japan’s latest space mission marks an important test for its expanding navigation network.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully launched the H3 No. 9 launch vehicle carrying the MICHIBIKI (QZS-7) navigation satellite. The rocket lifted off on Tuesday morning from the Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan.
QZS-7 satellite will strengthen Japan’s navigation system
The QZS-7 spacecraft has become part of Japan’s MICHIBIKI Quasi-Zenith Satellite System. It is designed to provide more accurate positioning for smartphone users and is also used in navigation systems for cars and other vehicles.
Preparations for the launch had been underway for several days. The H3 No. 9 launch was initially scheduled for Friday, but was postponed until Monday due to a typhoon. Later, weather conditions near the spaceport forced JAXA to delay the mission by another day.
Japan plans to increase the number of MICHIBIKI satellites
At present, MICHIBIKI’s positioning services are provided by five satellites. The Japanese government intends to expand the orbital constellation to seven spacecraft. This is expected to enable the system to provide a full range of navigation services.
The H3 is Japan’s new main launch vehicle and is gradually replacing the H2A, which remained Japan’s primary rocket for more than 20 years. Following the unsuccessful launch of H3 No. 8 in December, JAXA investigated engine problems. In June, a rocket of this type successfully placed several small satellites into orbit, and the H3 No. 9 launch marked the next step in the development of Japan’s space program.
