ANA and JAL are raising international fuel surcharges after aviation fuel prices surged amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Fuel surcharges on ANA and JAL flights between Japan and North America will rise to JPY 56,000 (INR 33,991.52) this summer.

Travellers flying with Japan’s two largest carriers, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), should prepare for significantly higher ticket costs this summer, as both airlines move to sharply increase fuel surcharges on international routes amid soaring aviation fuel prices linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The carriers announced that fuel surcharges for international tickets booked in May and June 2026 will rise dramatically, as oil market disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran conflict have sent jet fuel prices to record highs. Initially, both airlines had planned to implement the increases in June, but the timetable has now been brought forward in response to rapidly climbing fuel costs.

How Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways’ revised fuel surcharges look

Flights from Japan to North America and Europe on JAL will see fuel surcharges increase from JPY 29,000 (INR 17,603.80) to JPY 56,000 (INR 33,991.52).
ANA’s surcharge on the same routes will rise from JPY 31,900 (INR 19,363.03) to JPY 56,000 (INR 33,991.52).
For flights between Japan and South Korea, both airlines will more than double their current fuel surcharges.

According to industry data reported by Nikki Asia, “Iran’s nearly complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global crude oil supplies, causing jet fuel prices to skyrocket. The price of Singapore kerosene, the Asian benchmark for jet fuel prices, reached an all-time high of USD 242.06 (INR 23,195.54) per barrel on March 30, 2026.”

The surge in costs is now rippling across the broader transport and manufacturing sectors in Japan, with airlines, logistics firms and industrial companies increasingly adopting fuel surcharges to offset rising operating expenses.

JAL President Mitsuko Tottori said the airline is considering formally applying for further airfare increases tied to higher fuel levies. Under revised pricing structures, ANA and JAL could raise fuel surcharges on Japan-North America routes to as high as JPY 59,000 (INR 35,814.36) under the maximum permitted tier.

However, both airlines said they will set May and June surcharges at the second-highest level rather than the absolute maximum, partly in consideration of government support measures. Many other airlines are also warning that if instability in the Middle East persists, travellers could face even steeper surcharge increases for tickets booked for July and August departures.
