TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is scheduled for a two-day visit to South Korea starting May 19 to meet with the country’s President Lee Jae Myung, according to a Japanese government notification to parliament, Kyodo reported as quoted by Antara.
Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki announced the agenda for the visit at a House of Representatives steering committee meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
During the visit, PM Sanae Takaichi is expected to discuss energy security cooperation amid disruptions to crude oil supplies caused by the US-Israel war on Iran, which has spilled over to the wider Middle East region.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss beefing up critical mineral supply chains, according to the diplomatic sources.
The sources also said that the meeting is likely to take place in Andong, Lee’s hometown in southeastern South Korea.
Sanae Takaichi’s visit is part of the bilateral practice of reciprocal visits by leaders of two countries, known as “shuttle diplomacy.”
