If a pub has “BASASHI” on the menu, I can’t help but order it.

  1. What do you have it with? Drink and such?

I love 馬刺し, but I prefer a more marbled cut. How was this? Kinda chewy?

Same, although it’s usually a 50/50 on whether or not it’s tender. I don’t mind a little chewing though.

  4. My first date with my Japanese wife was at an izakaya in Kyoto. She asked me if I had ever eaten horse before. I hadn’t and so she ordered basashi. She told me then, “If the menu has horse, you get horse.” So at least, she shares the same sentiments as you. I do enjoy basashi a fair bit but I wouldn’t personally say it’s a must order if I see it on a menu. I also enjoy cooked horse dishes, probably more so.

    I am curious….
    Source of the horse meat?

Like are there entire ranches in Japan raising horse for human food or is Japan importing horse meat from elsewhere or is there some seriously dark side of where the horse meat comes from? ( failed race horses perhaps? )

I lived in Okinawa for 3 years back in the 80s and watched the Okinawan bull fights which are nowhere even close to what the Spanish bull fights are like.
