A collection of many of the top United States-based sprinters and milers proved no match for Japan’s T O Elvis in the $939,600 Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) May 2 at Churchill Downs.
In his first start outside Japan, T O Elvis delivered a head-turning performance Saturday in his return to Kentucky, where he was bred. Despite racing three wide through the turn under jockey Ryusei Sakai, T O Elvis rolled past rivals on the turn, seized the lead in early stretch while four wide, opened a clear advantage in midstretch, and drew off to a 3 1/4-length victory.

“This is one of the most happiest moments of my life,” said owner Tomoya Ozasa in the Churchill Downs winner’s circle. “This is actually the only Kentucky-bred I have at the moment, but I may need to increase that number.”
Coming into the race, the story was the grade 1 debut of Godolphin homebred Knightsbridge , who brought a four-race win streak into Saturday’s 7-furlong test—including three straight grade 3 scores at Gulfstream Park over this winter. He was sent off the 8-5 favorite, but the 5-year-old son of Nyquist faded to sixth after contending from second or third throughout.
“I had a good trip,” said Knightsbridge’s jockey Junior Alvarado. “We were sitting there in second and, when I turned for home, I asked my horse and he didn’t fire today.”
Instead, it was the field’s other horse entered for his grade 1 debut off a four-race win streak who shined.
T O Elvis had not raced this year after closing 2025 with that extended win streak—taking those races by a combined 15 lengths—capped by a 5-length score in the Capella Stakes (G3) at Nakayama Racecourse.
After considering a season-opening start in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) that ultimately did not come together, trainer Daisuke Takayanagi became intrigued by a return to Kentucky for T O Elvis’s 4-year-old debut. The trainer also sent out UAE Derby (G2) winner Wonder Dean to an eighth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1) Saturday with Sakai up.
“I wanted to race him for his breeder; that’s why I came over here,” Takayanagi said. “I understand this field was really, really strong. Seeing him perform like this, I’m really happy for that.”
Takayanagi said he’ll give strong consideration toward a return to Kentucky for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Keeneland this fall.
T O Elvis completed the 7 furlongs in 1:20.49 on a fast track. He was followed home by grade 3 winner Disruptor , who rallied from ninth early to finish second while earning his first grade 1 placing. Crazy Mason , who finished third in last year’s Forego Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, rallied from 11th early to secure another grade 1 placing when third.
“It’s so special to get a win like this at Churchill Downs,” Sakai, who is known to U.S. racing fans as the regular rider of 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Forever Young , said through a translator. “It’s been such a great experience.”
Bred by Jeff and Melissa Prunzik, T O Elvis is out of Stopshoppingdebbie , a daughter of Curlin who won multiple stakes while racing in Washington state. She also has produced grade 1-placed stakes winner Generous Tipper , by Street Sense .
T O Elvis is the first grade 1 winner overall and first graded stakes winner this season for Volatile , a 10-year-old son of Violence who stands for $10,000 at Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky.
