Ukrzaliznytsia has unveiled its new flagship train, the “Sakura,” which will run between Kyiv and Uzhhorod. The launch was announced by Oleksiy Balesta, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development, during an official presentation, according to UNIAN.

The new flagship “Sakura” train: what is known?

The “Sakura” train is part of Ukrzaliznytsia’s rolling stock and service modernization. According to Oleksiy Balesta, the project was implemented with the support of Japanese partners, underscoring the initiative’s international nature.

The train consists of four new cars manufactured by a Ukrainian company. They feature a thematic design with images of cherry blossoms, as well as updated route display panels.

Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia,” noted that the cars are equipped with modern systems, including air conditioning that will operate even during stops when the train is not moving. This should significantly improve passenger comfort.

Route and schedule of the “Sakura” train

Why Uzhhorod and “Sakura”?

Uzhhorod is traditionally considered the cherry blossom capital of Ukraine. Every spring, the city attracts thousands of tourists who come to see the Japanese cherry blossoms in bloom.

That is why the train’s name and its concept have not only aesthetic but also symbolic significance—they highlight the cultural connection between Ukraine and Japan.

The launch of the “Sakura” train is not only an upgrade to the service but also an additional incentive for the development of domestic tourism. The Kyiv–Uzhhorod route provides convenient access to Zakarpattia, which remains one of the most popular vacation destinations.
