As an increasing number of tourist facilities across Japan adopt a dual pricing system for foreign tourists and visitors from outside their local areas, experts have launched discussions on creating guidelines for the system.

An expert panel to the Tourism Agency began talks to discuss pricing recommendations for tourist facilities and services.

Participants were introduced to the case in Himeji Castle in Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, where admission fees between Himeji City residents and nonresidents were differentiated in March.

The former now pay an admission fee of 1,000 yen, or over 6 dollars, with the latter paying 2,500 yen, or over 15 dollars.

Experts called on the need for authorities to thoroughly explain why the measure is necessary when public tourist facilities plan to adopt the dual pricing system.

Agency officials say related personnel will be invited to the panel meetings for hearings before guidelines are drawn up before March, 2027.
