President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will visit Japan from May 26 to 29 as part of strengthening the country’s ties with its Asian ally, Malacañang said on Friday.
In a statement, the Palace said the President’s upcoming state visit is upon the invitation of the Japanese government.
They will be received by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan at the Imperial Palace for a welcome ceremony, state call, and state banquet.
Marcos will hold a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae to discuss the future trajectory of their nations’ Strengthened Strategic Partnership and continue their recent discussions on current international developments in energy and food security and maritime security.
The President is also scheduled to meet with Japanese business groups and the members of the Filipino community, as part of his official engagements during the state visit.
The last state visit to Japan by a Philippine President was by former President Benigno Aquino III in June 2015.
In January 2016, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko undertook a state visit to the Philippines.
The Philippines and Japan are commemorating the 70th anniversary of the normalization of their diplomatic relations this year.
