Is it just foreigner bias or is there really something uniquely quaint and harmonic about the way rivers are incorporated into the architecture in Japan? I don't know, but I loved to walk along them.

There’s nothing like it where I am from. I lived right near the banks of the Oyodo River in Miyazaki for a year in 1992-3. It’s a bigger river than these, but I loved that so much. You had the embankments that were so convenient to get where you wanted on a bike. And they would do the summer festivals right near the banks and shoot fireworks there during summer festivals. Great memories.

Spent a lot of time in my childhood visiting family in Japan and your pictures gave me such a good feeling! Also I can smell them in my mind!!! I totally get what you are saying and I think number 6 is my favourite.

I live in what is supposedly one of the most beautiful places on the planet to live – Santa Barbara. The problem we have is in areas that we have that are like this, small creeks with concrete walls that flow through the city, are completely covered in graffiti and have trash and stolen bikes. Add to that you shouldn’t walk in those areas at night due to the crime (and a lenient court system that simply lets the criminals go).

That is why love going to Japan. It’s clean. It’s safe. It has that retro vibe in some areas. Complete overwhelming of the senses in the city but still feeling safe.

One of my favorite walks is along the hot spring water creeks that flow through Kinosaki, especially this time of year with the cherry blossoms lining the creeks.

I’m just amazed that the majority of them have little to no garbage in them. If you’ve gone to SE Asia, there is pretty much garbage everywhere you go, especially in waterways.

In my country, they are always full of trash everywhere. The water is severely polluted.

So i dont think it’s foreigner bias. They look beautiful, peaceful and clean

I loved this vibe in a few places we visited in Japan, especially Kobe and Kyoto. The stream that ran through Magome and along the Nakasendo was also really cool, as you could tell how much effort had been put in to collect the stream over so many miles and through the little farm towns.

No 9 is the best picture with the little store.
