I tried the latest luxury train in Kyushu, Japan, traveling from Beppu to Hakata. The train is called the Kanpachi Ichiroku.

As a solo traveler, I know that "solo tax" far too well. If you're going to charge me as two people, I want double the meals!
Ichiroku = 1 6?
Nice
Beppu staion brings back memories. ❤
As Japan being a country convinient for solo travalers this surcharge surprises me.
Maybe because they could not give away the other seat at your table?
The food looks delicous anyways 😊
edit.
I am sorry for your disappointing trip. For this price you should at least got a tea/ coffee and something sweet at the end..
I thought at first the announcement at the end of your disappointing trip said "Thank you for coming…Hope we don't see you again." But clearly, no one in Japan would say that. Sorry it was a disappointment. I hope you find !! food in Hakata.
Solo Tax, because living alone isn't hard enough already. Beautiful bento. Thanks for always letting us tag along.
Hang on… Hang on… Is that a KiHa 40 series they are using? If so, I am all for that!
What a long… strange trip it's been.
Thanks, STJ! For the first time, you made me want to see a self-drive city break video from you 😅! The train looked lovely and so did the bento, and the scenery, but the shaking would have driven me nuts. 😅
IMHO the solo tax should only be applicable if the seat across from you was unassigned because YOU didn’t want a neighbor?
I see a pattern here— Whenever you don’t get a lot of good service on a train, cruise, or at a restaurant
I can confidently expect you will soon seek out a fun place to make it up to yourself! 😅
We’re all rooting for you all the way! 🍛 🍚 🍹
That's wrong many people in your country are single. Sounds like a punishment!!
Seems like quite an old train it's cool. Boo! On no coffee!! I support your protest 😁
When you said drinks cost extra, I thought you were talking about adult beverages. For the price, it should be all-inclusive.
You should
Jumped off and got a drink from the platform machine.
IMHO, the ride wasn't worth the fare.
I half expected you to say the restroom also cost money to use…
So weird..you pay a lot of money for train and food..and you must pay extra for drink/water/cooffe..😲 that is not nice…😑
Fancy atmosphere and the food looked decent, but it's a bit cheeky to charge that kind of money (plus singles tax!) for only one menu option (what if you don't like seafood?) and no drinks included. Even the crummy trains here in Canada give you a meal and drink provided you're in business class, and for less money.
That doesn’t seem like it was worth the price tag! And then a surcharge for single payer. You had to pay a large amount for bad or no service. I would not recommend this. If you are going to overcharge for everything – even water & coffee you should go above and beyond with your service! Sorry for this experience. You should think about opening a coffee business at one of the stops 😁
The food looks really good the train looks clean I don't know how the bed is
It maybe long but it's about the experience. No rush
This is the same route as the Yufuin No Mori. That train has much more charm! (plus great yuzu lemonade)
Wow! You shouldn’t be punished with a tax just because you choose to travel alone! And really, they couldn’t throw in some water and coffee for free?! Nice video STJ but if I ever make it to Japan I think I will pass on this train ride! 😊
It's too bad about the solo tax. Maybe they should have had a few single seat options on the train. Also if they offer a meal as part of the package it should include unlimited water and at least one coffee/tea drink. Like everything in our current economic situation prices go up, service goes down. Have a nice time on the rest of your trip.
I agree with you. The ride was pleasant but the service was a little lacking. I think for little luxury the service could be a little better. But it's definitely something to be experienced. Thanks for the trip!
Two huge 👍🏻👍🏻for you my friend
And two 👎🏻👎🏻for the train
So sorry Solo Travel!😕 Not use to your having a negative experience. It looks like the bento was good but I am surprised the water was not complimentary for the fare you paid. Customers should come first and be given consideration for their comfort. Well I guess, like you said, it makes for a good and bad comparison. It's a beautiful train at least 🙂 and so is the countryside. Thank you and I hope your next experience lifts your spirits.
Did they charge for the restrooms? Thank you for experiencing the disappointing trips so we don't have to.
😊😊🏆🏆
I never understood the single supplement. Seems like a rip off cash grab.
Things like a solo tax make me sad. It's a backward approach if you ask me. Why not return to the new deal policies that enabled the "economic miracle". Adding solo taxes without addressing the root issues just makes life harder for people already in hard spots.
That said, in practice it's a "couples discount"; I don't think it should apply when the train is mostly empty, but I understand ultimately. I also realize that trains like this often keep smaller rural lines alive. It's important for those of us with the means to support these things. Especially when the experience is also ultimately wonderful and quite unique.
I am sorry that you had an unsatisfactory result, but I appreciate the video and look forward to the next one.
In the US, we call it nickel and diming you when, even after you paid a lot for something, they charge you extra for things which should have been included or free.
