The stone baths of Diamond Princess: Shed your inhibitions and your clothes at Izumi Japanese Bath on the Diamond Princess. Strictly speaking, it’s not an onsen – hard to get geothermal springs on a cruise ship. But as one of the largest bathhouses at sea, Izumi certainly offers the onsen experience with its stone baths, saunas and views. And just to clarify, swimmers were most definitely required at the heated pool referred to above.

Fine dining at sea: Order the Signature Sushi course at Makoto Ocean. It’s the newest restaurant on the Diamond Princess. Seven courses of soup, rolls, nigiri and mochi, it’s as much a delight for the eyes as the tastebuds.

Meander through stalactites: Go underground at the Akiyoshido caves. From Shimonoseki, it’s an hour’s drive, through countryside, farmland and villages. Japan’s largest limestone cave features towering stalactite formations and enormous caverns along its one-kilometre walking trail, which ends with a crystal-clear stream flowing over mossy rocks.
