The viral Japanese-style egg salad sandwich sold at 7-Eleven stores was one of several food items recalled by Health Canada due to concerns of being contaminated with listeria.

The “famous” sandwich launched in Canada on March 4th is made with eggs, Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise and fresh shokupan (milk bread).

Sixteen 7-11 food products were affected by the recall including the spicy buffalo chicken wrap, rotisserie chicken chipotle wrap and veggie wrap. To see a full list of the affected products, visit Health Canada’s recall list.

The affected products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and all have a best before date between April 12 and 15.

Any recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store you purchased them at.

The recall notice states “food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.”

7-Eleven issued the recall and stated that there has “been no reported illnesses” to date with people eating these items.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is investigating.
