Japan Railways Group companies have announced an increase in the price of the Japan Rail Pass starting October 1, marking the first revision in three years. The hike will apply to passes used by foreign visitors and reflects recent fare changes across railway operators, according to company statements.
The price of the pass will rise by about 5% to 6%. For a seven-day pass, the ordinary class fare will increase to 53,000 yen from 50,000 yen, while the Green Class fare will go up to 74,000 yen from 70,000 yen.
Fare revision linked to railway operators’ changes
The Japan Rail Pass is available only to foreign visitors and is sold through designated overseas agents and the official website. It allows travel across most services, including the shinkansen bullet trains, with some exceptions.
Japan Railways Group companies said the latest increase follows fare revisions carried out by East Japan Railway, Hokkaido Railway, West Japan Railway and Kyushu Railway since the last price update.
Prices for passes purchased through the official website will remain unchanged for a limited period, with the timing of the revision to be announced later.
The pass remains a key offering for international tourists, providing unlimited travel across Japan’s rail network under a single ticket system.
