During the last ice age approximately 20,000 years ago, sea level was approximately 100 m lower than it is today, and the Seto Inland Sea was a vast landmass.
This land was home to large animals such as Naumann’s elephants and giant elk, and people there lived by hunting.
Bottom trawl fishing boats sometimes unearth fossils of large animals, providing direct evidence of the environment at that time.
Knife-shaped stone tools used for hunting have been excavated from the Jitakenokojima site.

Around 10,000 years ago, as the last glacial period ended and global warming progressed, seawater began to invade the Seto Inland Sea due to the Jomon Transgression.
The Jomon people began living near the sea and their lifestyle revolved around fishing.
Brackish water corbiculatus, or Yamato freshwater clams, have been found in the older layers of the Inujima shell mound, while saltwater hard clams have been found in the newer layers, revealing the state of the transgression.
Fragments of pottery with mountain-shaped pressed patterns, a characteristic of the early Jomon period, have also been excavated.

Approximately 6,000 years ago, the Seto Inland Sea was formed in a form similar to that of today.
The ruins on Jitakenokojima provide valuable information for understanding the environmental changes in the Seto Inland Sea from the Paleolithic to the Jomon period, and the lifestyles of the people who adapted to them.
