(KAIT) – On April 1, 1945, American forces launched the amphibious invasion of Okinawa during World War II.

U.S. forces succeeded in capturing the Japanese island on June 22 after a battle in which more than 240,000 died, including as many as 150,000 Okinawan civilians.

July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Leading up to the anniversary, we will celebrate with stories about our independence, highlighting those who’ve made a difference in our nation, state, and here in Region 8.

It’s a project we call: We The People: Celebrating 250 Years
