This is a plate of omurice from レストラン 洋飲食 水道橋 (Yoinsyoku) just a few minutes walk from Suidobashi sta.
It’s a humble establishment on the 2nd floor with around 10 seats, run by 3 hardworking gentlemen. I must’ve had this plate 50 times over the past two years and it tastes just as good as the first time I had it. Sure it won’t win any awards, but I always think about it when I’m away. Entering the restaurant after a while always feels nostalgic to me.
Do you have a dish that makes you feel the same way? Feel free to share it 🙂

I am the only one?
You miss the kid’s menu?
Sorry, couldn’t resist
Someone likes ketchup and mayo
All very DIY-able:
– lightly sauced spaghetti, add some stevia it’s kinda sweeter in Asia.
– shredded cabbage and lettuce with mayo & honey mustard dressing, like the salad at teriyaki shops.
– simple ketchup fried rice. Make an omelette half way don’t fold plop it over the rice. Can get store bought gravy.
Is omurice a breakfast thing or anytime food in Japan? It looks super tasty.
If you live in the US and can go to Trader Joe’s I buy the Chicken Fried Rice and mix in ketchup then add the omelet on top. It’s not as authentic but it’s damn close. I actually posted it before in my post history you can see it.
i’ll add this place to my list for next visit! looks delicious
coco katsu curry is the dish that does it for me. I know there’s so many other japanese curries out there but coco just hits a very specific spot for me
I thought, you thought, we all thought.
This is one dish that you could totally learn how to prepare and all the ingredients are available everywhere
I don’t miss penis shaped condiments and I also don’t miss stuff like omurice. There are many street food / matsuri things as well as home cooking side staples that I miss from the simple Japanese foods section – especially as I find myself spending less and less time in Japan recently – but things typically associated with family restaurants these days, pretty much never.
Oh man we wanted to go here last time I was in Japan – we often stay near Suidobashi if we aren’t staying at my in laws in Kojimachi. But we ended up running out of time. I love omurice so much. It’s easy to make at home too.
