Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock average sank 5% minutes after the opening Monday to a 2026 low as the conflict in the Middle East continued and Brent crude traded above $115 per barrel.
The benchmark clawed back some of the morning losses and ended the day 2.79% lower at the close.
At the beginning of the year, the Nikkei 225 was 51,010.28. It reached 59,332.43 on Feb. 26, two days before the United States and Israel carried out an attack on Iran, and has been moving downward ever since.
