Morrison Foerster (MoFo) is advising investment management firm Nippon Sangyo Suishin Kiko Group (NSSK) on the restructuring and commercialisation of Japan’s men’s professional golf tour. The firm’s global, multidisciplinary private equity, sports, media and entertainment team was led by Singapore-based cross-border private equity partner Scott Jalowayski and Tokyo private equity partner Naoya Shiota.

MoFo said in a press release that the transaction was expected to accelerate the commercialisation of the men’s tour and contribute to the sustainable growth of Japan’s sports industry. As part of the restructuring, NSSK has entered into a business transfer agreement with the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO). Under the agreement, the tour’s commercial operations will be transferred from JGTO to a newly established entity, Japan Professional Golf Tour Co (J-Tour).

Once the transaction is complete, J-Tour will be responsible for the commercial functions of the Japan men’s professional golf tour. Japan’s golf market, estimated to be worth around USD8.8 billion, is one of the country’s largest sports sectors.
