Shinjuku, despite its reputation, is actually fairly straightforward. There are no Shinkansen complications, the main JR lines are all on the same level and parallel to each other, the private rail lines are pretty much also parallel to the JR lines and arranged for generally easy access. There are five main east-west access routes, one of them is not within the paid area, and four are. All five cross the station, with no complex changes in depth. It gets a bit more complicated when you add in the subway lines and their de facto equivalents, but so long as you know where the stations physically are, you can get to them somehow.
Tokyo station, in contrast, is none of the above. Shinkansens (and two different companies at that) means extra barriers which the average traveler can't get through, and the tracks are are at multiple levels. Chuo lines are above ground by themselves, Sobu rapid lines are below ground by themselves, and then Keiyo lines are way out there. There is a whole middle layer (Grandsta) that is still a complete mystery to me, and even though people like to say it's "simpler" because there is only one metro line, in reality Otemachi IS Tokyo station's metro component, and it's a mess of its own.
And don't get me started on Shibuya…
Shinjuku Station used to be far worse before they opened up the east to west passageway. Before then there was no way to get from the east side to the west without going through the ticket barriers, but no way of knowing that. You could wander through the station for ages looking for metro line entrances that didn't exist on your side of the station.
Woohoo, another station video! Thanks to your other ones, this was the only station I found difficult to navigate, so I'm thrilled to get some ammo to fight back on my next trip.
Seibu shinjuku station was a life saver for me and my fiance in January, much smaller and easier for a late night getting home trip.
for me personally kyoto station was more confusing. that was really the station in which i was mostly searching for the right plattforms.
They have a katsuya in that area. Love that place.
Just want to say that black leather jacket you've been wearing in your last few videos looks great. π€π
Great work. I feel like I'm watching a Kylie Minogue music video.
Thank you Abby! I will probably watch this video everyday until I leave forJapan in June as I seen the hotel I will be staying at in this video. Sunroute
This is a neat video! Good info!
Extremely informative and well organized. Thank you for taking the time to put up this video. ππ»
Kabukicho (the area by the red sign) is the one area of Tokyo I did not enjoy. Felt like walking around a high school campus as an adult, and I had my one negative experience of my trip. A non-Japanese man aggressively came at me, trying to sell me something. The one moment I did not feel safe. Omoide Yokocho was a highlight though.
Maybe a video about shibuya station would also be helpfull as more people get lost over there
Headed back to Shinjuku in December. This video helped because my wife and myself walked around the station endlessly.π
You forgot to mention: the Beastie Boys video. ππ
Glad to see this
Going to Tokyo in May and staying in Shinjuku south of new South Gate
This would be our hub in exploring Tokyo
Love your videos but this time I barely understood π.
Anybody who can confidently navigate Shinjuku Station deserves a medal. And you deserve a medal for covering all that ground in the rain!
Thanks Abby! Iβm leaving for my first trip to Japan on Monday. Your videos have been very helpful.
Thank you very much for this. It took a few trips thru Shinjuku station before I realized that the station is a lot of other stations in one big complex.
Thank you! this is a very helpful guide. The first time i visited Shinjuku i got lost multiple times. It truly is a labyrinth π
This would have been so helpful! I was there in early March and got SO LOST⦠twice! Although I think it is because of the ongoing works
I was staying in Hotel Gracery (the one with the Godzilla head) and one day I was walking through Shinjuku station following (I thought) the signs that would take me out near the Cat Billboard. Somehow I emerged hundreds of metres from there, I experienced the exact opposite of deja vu. Instead of thinking "I've been here before." I thought "I have NEVER been here before" You've never been truly lost until you've been lost in Japan.
Hi, when preparing my 1st ever trip to Japan your videos helped out a lot and had a better experience. really appreciate you and your work
Best location to begin your first trip to Japan! The Gracery is really well located, and it also has Godzilla!
I wish this came out earlier, haha I literally just got back from Tokyo. On Tuesday night, I got a tattoo and I was on my way to the station, I took my phone out to check the platform and all (since it's my first time traveling alone) and then an old man kept asking me if I needed help and I politely said no… until he touch my phone and grab me by the arm to show me the direction and I said no thanks a couple of time.. he let go and said Give my money! and I had none so he got really mad but I escaped from there. I never felt so uncomfortable.. mind you.. it was after 9pm.. It was scary!
Heading to Tokyo in April/May. Thanks for the great navigation tips for Shinjuku. Going to The Metropolitan building as well as the sights around the area, so this video was very much appreciated! Subcribed!
