Tokyo’s Most Unique Afternoon Tea? Japanese Tea & Tsukudani Pairing Experience

Today we’re visiting Tamakiya, a historic shop in Shinbashi that has been making tsukudani since the Edo period. Tsukudani is a traditional Japanese food made by simmering ingredients like seafood or seaweed in soy sauce and sugar (their secret recipe) until it becomes deeply savory and packed with umami.

This time, we’re here to try something new — Tamakiya’s Japanese style afternoon tea, where their signature tsukudani and furikake are paired with carefully brewed Japanese green tea.

During the experience, we learn how to properly steep Japanese tea, discover where the tea leaves are grown and harvested, and taste a variety of sweet and savory dishes made with Tamakiya’s tsukudani. The course also includes several cups of sencha brewed in different ways, allowing us to explore the flavors of Japanese tea just like a tea tasting.

It’s a fascinating way to experience Japanese food culture, tea, and tradition all in one place, right in the heart of Tokyo.

If you’re visiting Tokyo and looking for something different from the usual restaurants and cafes, this is definitely an experience worth checking out.

  1. I had a cat named Keiko, a sweetie. Keiko-san is adorable and a very good teacher. Even tho' this tea is not what I know of, it still followed the afternoon tea "rules". Really like those Hohin pots, cute. Good lesson on how to use them to get the best of your tea. Hi from sunny Oregon, US.

  2. Oooh Shinichi and Satoshi! I love tsukudani and everything looked so delicious! Thank you for showing us this place – hopefully one day we can come try it in person.

  8. Keiko-san is so sweet and knowledgeable. It's amazing how many ways tsukudani can be used and paired with very different beverages. So versatile! I'm always deeply impressed by the Japanese emphasis on excellence and how a niche shop like Tamakiya can stay in business and perfect it's products for so many generations (current owner Kyoko Tamaki is 10th generation, I believe). Thank you, Shinichi and Satoshi, for taking us to Tamakiya for afternoon tea! 💚💚

  11. Not as a criticism, but to highlight something new that Google does: Before being able to watch the video, Google redirected me to a page about paid promotions.

  12. Tamakiya looks like such a great experience! Thanks for taking us on your food adventures. It really brightens my day.
