Niseko, Japan vs Zermatt, Switzerland: Ski Trip Showdown #ikonpass #niseko #zermatt #skitrips
You’ve got the IKON Pass, now the real question: Niseko or Zermatt? 🌍🎿
Both are heavy hitters with iconic views and unforgettable vibes—but they offer very different adventures. Niseko’s all about bottomless powder, onsens, and après sushi. Zermatt brings the Matterhorn, charming alpine town energy, and enough fondue to fuel a full day on the slopes.
I break down snow totals, terrain, travel times, and trip pricing—so if you’re torn between Japow and Euro-chic, this one’s for you.
So what is it next season? Japan or Europe?

“Niseko, Japan versus Zermatt, Switzerland both on the IKON Pass. Both World Class ski resorts with iconic mountain views. Zermatt is the charming ski town on the border of Switzerland and Italy that is staring directly at the Matterhorn. Niseko is in Northern Japan and has panoramic views of Mount Yotei, a stratovolcano that looks like its out of a painting.
You’ve got your IKON Pass and you’ve got to decide, Japan or Europe? Let’s break it down.
Zermatt is a slightly larger resort when it comes to terrain and vertical but Niseko absolutely crushes Zermatt when it comes to snowfall totals. Niseko gets almost three times the amount of snow Zermatt does every year. Zermatt is mostly groomed intermediate runs while Niseko has glades, it has backcountry, it has steeps and this is where you want to go if you want to ride the legendary JAPOW.
Pricing a trip between the two resorts depends on your style, but in general, Niseko will come out to be cheaper. I recently priced both for a couple out of Denver, and Niseko came out to be about $5200 and Zermatt came out to be about $6200.
Travel time is pretty much identical out of Denver, 18 hours door to door, but it depends on where you live.
Who wins? Zermatt has been rated the No. 1 ski resort in the world like four times in the last 10 years, and for good reason. The place has some serious charm. Walking around Zermatt, you feel like you’re walking in a snow globe, and Niseko is pure powder paradise. It gets some of the highest snowfall totals in the world, and after skiing you can choose between sushi, onsens, or authentic Wagyu beef.
Zermatt is a romantic trip with skiing in the background. Niseko is a ski trip with sushi and saunas in the background.

As a swiss person: if you're from the western world then it's not a question. Zermatt isn't too special in any one aspect. It's just an average boring ski resort but improved in almost every way. Niseko is just an entirely different world and the entire experience, lifestyle and trip is not even comparable to anything you knew before. Not necessarily luxurious or perfectly polished but so interesting and different that it's much more worth it. Like if you have a thanksgiving turkey you wouldn't also buy an entire pig carcass to put next to it cause yeah sure it's more meat and tastier and shit, but you already have something like it. A pumpkin pie however… Oh god that's what you'd love to have as a desert.
This is an excellent breakdown of the two. Go to Zermatt if you want to be in a winter wonder land , but go to niseko if you want a skiing wonderland
Japannnn all the wayyyyy I’m going there in januaryyyy
Flats and powder or groomers with views. Views are unbeatable at zermatt and it snows a lot in japan but if you actually care about skiing difficult terrain north America reigns Supreme by miles and miles
Niseko all the way
お金があればスイスに行きたい
I cant speak for zermatt, but I know nieseko is amazing for skiing at least. The town is also amazing, however it is not as “winter wonderlands” as zermattt
Dm please for iten
I’d love to go to either.
But I’ll never buy one of the ski super passes that have destroyed American skiing. They can go f themselves. Skiing Zermatt or Niseko is cheaper without the pass. And in the US/Canada, I will bypass all of the resorts that are part of these passes in favor of privately owned and family owned resorts.
Wonder what Niseko is like these days. Had a memorable trip there as a teen in 1970. Liked it more than Zao.
"Niseko has some of the highest snowfall totals in the world" Meanwhile me chilling in Mt. Baker with 1000 inches of annual snowfall and lifts that don't make you feel like you are about to die.
