The Japan Tourism Agency (MLIT) has released preliminary figures for 2025 inbound tourism consumption, highlighting India’s strong growth as a source market. In 2025, Germany ranked first globally as the fastest-growing market for tourism and leisure spending in Japan, while India grew 4.2 per cent year on year to secure the fourth position worldwide. Within South and Southeast Asia, India recorded the third-fastest growth after Singapore (11.1 per cent) and Malaysia (6.6 per cent).

Reflecting this momentum, total travel consumption by Indian visitors to Japan reached an estimated 78.4 billion yen in 2025. This represents a significant year-on-year increase of 39.6 per cent, placing India among the fastest-rising contributors to Japan’s inbound tourism spending. The surge marks a rise of 22.2 billion yen compared to 2024, when Indian spending stood at 56.2 billion yen.

Indian travellers also demonstrated higher-than-average spending patterns. Per-person expenditure averaged 276,718 yen, considerably higher than the overall foreign visitor average of 224,806 yen in the tourism and leisure category. Spending was largely concentrated on accommodation (43.8 per cent), followed by food and beverages (18.7 per cent) and shopping (17.7 per cent).

The growth in Indian arrivals has been attributed to improved air connectivity, a stronger economy, and increasing interest among Indian travellers in Japan’s culture, traditions and natural attractions. Arrivals from India reached 315,100 in 2025, marking a 35.2 per cent rise from 233,061 visitors in 2024.

The surge in both arrivals and spending highlights India’s growing importance in Japan’s inbound tourism landscape. With rising awareness of Japan’s year-round attractions—from cherry blossoms and autumn foliage to winter snow experiences—Indian travellers are increasingly positioning Japan as a preferred all-season destination.
