Simmons & Simmons has appointed Chris Studebaker, former general counsel at IBM Japan, as a partner and head of its dispute resolution initiative.

He began his new role on 2 March 2026, but will need to re-register as a foreign lawyer in accordance with Japan’s regulatory requirements.

“Chris has an impressive track record resolving cross-border disputes with a Japanese element. His arrival will add significant breadth to [the] services we offer Japanese and international businesses as they manage risk in Japan and further afield. Chris’s linguistic and cultural capabilities, coupled with his astute dispute resolution skills, makes him an excellent addition to our Tokyo team,” Aaron Patience, partner and Tokyo office head, said.

With nearly 20 years of experience, Studebaker specialises in high-value cross-border disputes, regulatory compliance and investigations, with significant experience in IT-related matters, including AI, cybersecurity and data privacy.
