Kitami Shrine was built in Meiji 30 (1897) and enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke Hime no Kami, and Sumiyoshi Okami. Originally named Gokoku Shrine, it was renamed Kitami Shrine in Showa 17 (1942). The shrine is not large but features many historical stone monuments, allowing visitors to explore and learn about local history. The spring annual festival is held every June, and the autumn grand festival in September, both of which are very important local events.

Kitami Shrine’s “shaped omikuji” (fortune slips) are inspired by Kitami’s specialty – onions. Kitami is Japan’s largest onion producer; due to low rainfall and large day-night temperature differences, the onions grown here are sweet and store well. These “Fukuota Yobimikuji” onion-shaped fortune slips are placed in a wooden box, and you can use a small shovel to dig out your favorite onion – it’s incredibly cute!
