US President Donald Trump has touted his endorsement of Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae as having played a role in her party’s landslide victory in the recent Lower House election.
Trump told reporters on Monday that he was “very honored” to see that Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, led by Takaichi, won by a landslide.
He said that she attributed the victory to his endorsement, adding, “that’s very good ’cause we have a great relationship with her and Japan.”
Trump had earlier expressed his support in a social media post on February 5, during the election campaign.
He also wrote that he looks forward to welcoming Takaichi to the White House on March 19.
The Japanese prime minister responded to his post on February 9, saying she was “sincerely grateful to President Donald J. Trump for his warm words.”
She added, “I look forward to visiting the White House this spring and to continuing our work together to further strengthen the Japan-U.S. Alliance.”
