Air Canada has unveiled a new seasonal route. The only non-stop flights from North America to Sapporo, Japan, are set to launch in December 2026.
This seasonal service will give travellers easy access to Hokkaido’s world-famous winter wonders, perfect timing for the peak snow season.
The new flights connect Vancouver International Airport (YVR) directly to New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Sapporo. They operate three times weekly from December 2026 through March 2027.
Air Canada deploys its modern Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the route, offering Signature Class (business), Premium Economy, and Economy cabins for a comfortable journey.

Exploring Sapporo in the Snow
Hokkaido stands out as a top winter destination. It boasts exceptional powder snow ideal for skiing and snowboarding. Visitors can also enjoy the iconic Sapporo Snow Festival, with its massive ice sculptures.
Relaxing hot springs (onsen) provide the perfect way to unwind after a day on the slopes. Food lovers will delight in authentic experiences, from rich ramen to fresh seafood and the famous Sapporo Beer.
This route strengthens Air Canada’s position as the leading carrier to Japan from North America. It offers the most non-stop destinations in the country from the mainland.
The airline already runs year-round flights to Tokyo-Narita and Tokyo-Haneda, plus summer seasonal service to Osaka-Kansai. Adding Sapporo expands options for leisure travellers chasing winter adventures.

Vancouver: Second Largest Pacific gateway
Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the benefits. “This new service boosts our global network and reinforces Vancouver as North America’s second-largest Pacific gateway,” he said.
Thanks to Vancouver’s location, the flights save over two hours of travel time each way compared to connecting options. For passengers in Hokkaido, it delivers the fastest link to North America, with easy connections to more than 45 cities across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico via YVR.
The announcement drew praise from officials. Canada’s Ambassador to Japan, Ian McKay, noted that the route will bring Canadians and Japanese closer. It strengthens people-to-people ties and opens new economic opportunities across the Pacific.

Vancouver International Airport CEO Tamara Vrooman welcomed the news. “As Canada’s Pacific gateway to Asia, YVR is ready for this direct service,” she said.
The route supports YVR’s role as a key trans-Pacific hub. It deepens trade, economic, and cultural links between Canada and Japan while adding travel and cargo choices.

Onboard Experience
Air Canada enhances the experience for Japan flights. Michelin-starred Chef Masaki Hashimoto designs special dishes for Signature Class dining on these routes.
Skiers and snowboarders benefit too—ski bags and equipment count within standard checked baggage allowances, no extra hassle.
This winter service makes exploring northern Japan’s vibrant regions simpler than ever. Whether you’re a snow sports fan, a culture seeker, a food enthusiast, or just love new adventures, Air Canada’s Sapporo flights open the door to an unforgettable escape. Bookings are open now for this exciting addition to trans-Pacific travel.
