Ukrainian Christmas Celebration in Kyoto with Traditional Nativity Play

As reported by the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan on Facebook

Last Sunday, Ukrainian Christmas arrived in Kyoto. The city’s Ukrainian community, together with Japanese friends, organized at the Center for International Exchange a real celebration, the central highlight of which was a nativity scene adapted into Japanese.

Celebration Highlights and Guest Participation

The event attracted more than 60 guests, many of whom were encountering the richness of Ukrainian Christmas traditions for the first time.

In addition to the nativity scene, Ukrainian carols were presented to the audience and a short presentation about Christmas customs – the didukh, the Christmas Star, the dishes and drinks of the festive table.

The program also included modern and folk dances, an exhibition of children’s drawings on the theme of Ukrainian Christmas traditions, as well as a tasting of Carpathian herbal teas and a fair with ingredients for borscht.

Additional Materials and Events

There was also mention of Ukraine’s participation in international festivals abroad, notably in Tokyo.

The organizers expressed gratitude to the volunteers for their help in preparing and conducting the celebration, as well as to the young helpers from the children’s ensemble “Barvinok” for participating in the event.

As part of the event, there was a master class on weaving the didukh – a Ukrainian Christmas decoration, which emphasized the roots and festive atmosphere of the event.
