Things To Do in Tokyo! Walking Tour around Tokyo Tower. Retired Travelers vlog!

Here it is. This is Tokyo Tower here in Tokyo. This is a closeup view of Tokyo Tower. And you know, the funny thing is this is the closest I’ve been to Tokyo Tower ever since I’ve ever come to Japan. It’s really funny. Um, have you ever noticed when you are like living in an area or stay in an area for a long period of time that you don’t end up actually going to do like the sightseeing things that you normally do? Give you one example. Um, we uh lived in the Houston area and we didn’t visit like NASA until my wife’s father came to visit from Japan and he’s like, “Oh, I want to go see NASA.” And we’re like, “There’s NASA right there.” And we had yet to go there for many years. So, it’s funny when we come back to Tokyo, I don’t typically do a lot of the sightseeing things because I’m so familiar with it. But here we are. We’re now um slow traveling, uh, retired, and now we’re having finding more time to do these kind of things. So, it’s kind of fun to show you guys what you can do if you’re retired and still traveling through Southeast Asia. In Tokyo, you can come here to visit uh Tokyo Park. I’m sorry, not Tokyo Park, Tokyo Tower. Also, I want to show you guys um a couple different temples, a shrine, and also Shiva Park, which is right next door to kind of give you an idea of the things that we do here while we slow travel. So, let’s go ahead and get a closer look here at Tokyo Tower. Here we go. And this is like like a little courtyard, the garden area on the base of [snorts] Tokyo Tower. In Tokyo Tower, actually they I think they built this to kind of resemble the Eiffel Tower in uh Paris. But man, when you get up close and personal, it is huge. [laughter] Wow. Also, as you can see around here, it is autumn, so all the leaves are kind of changing colors. So, it really makes it look nice. There you go, guys. Get a wonderful view of Tokyo Tower. I tell you what also this looks really nice also like at night time because it becomes like all red and it’s really pretty. Yeah. Traditional house. This is like a building. Actually, this is a restaurant, right? >> Yeah. >> This is a restaurant. Yeah. So, my wife would come here to dine with her boss. This restaurant, she said it’s really good. also take do a photo shoot here. >> Cute. >> Seriously, I [laughter] all the times I come to Tokyo, I never came to Tokyo Tower. It just boggles my mind and why I never came here. But at least I can come here and show you guys. As we’ve been traveling in Southeast Asia, you know, now that we’re retired, we kind of seek out things that are not rushed because when you’re typically on vacation holidays, you try to find things to do and you kind of kind of rush through it. But definitely being retired gives us a chance to kind of slow down our travels and enjoy these little things like sightseeing. Oh, wow. This is really cool. That is so big. All right, here we are. We’re at Zo Joe Gi Temple. Yeah, temple was rebuilt back in 1974. And this temple is uh for like Buddhism. And you see this temple is really big. I think it’s one of the biggest Buddhist temples here in Tokyo. And this is right across the street from the Toki Tower. So, if you’re coming visit this area and want to do some sightseeing, here’s the temple you want to come and visit. And it’s not only for tourists, but also very for um you know, for locals as well. So, a lot of people come by. Oh, >> you got to get the spirits away. Bad spirits way. >> Here we go. Bad spirits way. >> Here it is. >> All right. >> Temples and all. You can actually partake of praying ceremony. If you come here, um, you can make a donation. You buy one of those like at 10:30, 1:30. >> There you go. And that’s just kind of a ceremony kind of get the bad spirits away and let smoke come in. And uh yeah, it’s something that we do at the temples also. Uh we go to the shrine later on to show you guys Shinto religion. But here you go. This is also the statues. Let me show you this. So this is a garden. It says careg guardian uh deities of children. They’re dedicated for the safety growth of children and grandchildren. >> So they protect and keep warm their heads with a red hat, red, red apron, and the windmill. So, so you have the all these statues basically of children and protectors of children. Really nice. All right. This is Shogun’s cemetery or tombstone behind these doors. Pretty cool. I love the architecture and the the craftsmanship of these doors. So cool. But I love these like big stairs and big courtyards is like these temples. Kind of also reminds me of like the the castles. >> It is. It’s the Edo Shen temples. Um Edo period. >> Oh, castle. >> Yeah, this is that’s why his cemetery is here. >> Okay. That’s my So this is actually a castle then. >> Well, it’s not castle. [laughter] But this is like the castle area. Wow, this is so big. >> I’m just a big fan also of the architecture, the Asian architecture. It gets me really excited to see this architecture. It’s really cool. And as you can see, we have a lot of tourists that come here also to this temple. So, it’s a really popular tourist attraction. And also you can see the Toki Tower right back there too. So really cool. And these buildings are like in like the center of all these skyscrapers too, which is kind of really cool. It’s temple that’s surrounded by the modern world. >> The gallery. >> All right. Okay, guys. this gallery if you want to check it out. It costs 700 yen to go down and it’s also at the B1 level. The signs take you down there. And let’s say open from 10 to 4, closed on Tuesdays. Now, uh, normally I don’t think we’d be out here at this temple, uh, checking out this temple as well as the Tokyo Tower, but today was a a video day for my other food channel. And we found this wonderful, uh, buffet that was like 1,400 yen, which is around $9 and that’s a super cheap buffet. So, we went and came down here and made an episode, but the same time down here also checking out Tokyo Tower as well as these shrines and Shiva Park and uh taking you guys along. All right, let’s go ahead walk into this uh kind of garden area has bamboo trees. It’s really cool. Oh, wow. And around here, it’s like so peaceful and so quiet. So different from traveling to different tourist attractions. And this is uh Sheiba Park. And this park is really, really big. It’s one of the larger parks around this area. And as you can see, a lot of families are out here enjoying a nice day here in autumn. And the Sheiba Park has not only the temple, but also has a shrine. So we’re going to go to the shrine next and show you guys the shrine. Here we are guys. We’re at the uh Shiba Toshogu shrine and this is right next to the Shiva Park as well. And whenever you come into the shrine, you have these big arches. And typically what people do is they’ll also kind of bow as they enter the shrine area. Let’s take a glimpse at the shrine. And we were at the shrine the other day at the Hanozono shrine in Shinjuku. And uh we also prayed for prosperity. So hopefully we get the opportunity to have prosperity in our lives. But uh shrine is for Shinto, right? Shinto. And here you go. Yeah. The water and this kind of uh cleansing. No water today. No water today. But, uh, see here, the gates open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m. So, we have time to show you the shrine. Then we make offering and then we pray. [snorts] Positive thought, guys. Positive thought. That’s what you want to do. I’ll tell you what, you don’t have to be a religious person, whether it be a Christian, whether it be Shinto or uh Buddhism, but I’ll tell you what, some kind of spirituality, I think, is a good thing, especially when you want to bring prosperity into your life, having positive thoughts and great vibes, you know. So tell you what we come here to uh the shrine whether here at this uh Tokyo location also other locations throughout Tokyo. We’ve been to uh shrine always praying for prosperity and looking to the future as being positive. So yeah but that’s our day here. We’re finishing out our day at Tokyo Tower and we had a full day shooting the video for the other channel as well as visiting uh Tokyo Tower and Shiva Park and the shrine and the temple. So hope you guys enjoyed today’s video. Um, just want to let you know that if you are slow traveling through Asia and Tokyo, this might be a place you want to stop by. Take some time, enjoy the day, enjoy uh the sightseeing and enjoy the experience and enjoy the moments here in Tokyo. Till next time, guys. Have a wonderful day and we’ll see you back next video. Bye-bye.

Join us for a relaxing slow-travel day in Tokyo as we finally visit Tokyo Tower up close—something I’ve somehow never done despite coming to Japan for years! Today we’re taking our time, enjoying the sights the way retirees and long-term travelers love to do: unrushed, curious, and fully in the moment.

We start at the base of Tokyo Tower, surrounded by autumn leaves and incredible views. From there, we stroll over to the historic Zojoji Temple, one of Tokyo’s most important Buddhist temples, with its peaceful gardens, children’s guardian statues, and the impressive Edo-period mausoleum gates.

Then it’s a quiet, scenic walk through Shiba Park, a beautiful urban escape filled with families and colorful fall foliage. We end our day at the Shiba Toshogu Shrine, where we offer prayers for prosperity and reflect on the importance of maintaining positive energy while enjoying the freedom that retirement and slow travel bring.

If you’re a retired traveler, an expat, or someone dreaming about exploring Tokyo at your own pace, this episode will give you a real feel for what a peaceful day in the city can look like. From iconic landmarks to spiritual spots to hidden pockets of calm—this is why we love slow traveling through Asia.

Enjoy the journey, friends—and may prosperity and good vibes follow you wherever you go!

  1. Thanks for sharing your walk around Tokyo Tower. We don't spend much time in Tokyo during our visits; so, it's nice to see some of the sights around the city.
