For the first time, Tokyo came in second in the annual Global Power City Index (GPCI), which ranks cities according to their ability to attract people, enterprise and capital.

Released Wednesday by the Mori Memorial Foundation, the rankings score cities against six different categories — economy, research and development, livability, environment, cultural interaction, and accessibility.

Tokyo, which had been in third place since 2016, surpassed the previous long-term second-place city, New York. The gap between New York and Tokyo had narrowed last year.
