King of Tokyo is a lightweight board game that I will never turn down playing, but it’s never quite earned a spot in my permanent collection. That’s about to change, however, as videogame developer Microids has announced a digital adaptation that arrives in Spring 2026. An ultra-affordable version of King of Tokyo that can be played on my PC, Switch, Xbox, or PS5? Color me intrigued.

By the sounds of things, there won’t be any major changes to gameplay in King of Tokyo’s digital version. Everyone still plays as a giant, angry monster, determined to rule over Tokyo and beat down any creature that opposes them.

Each turn, players roll their pool of dice, rerolling as many as they like up to two more times in order to get the most desirable results. Depending on the results, your dice can grant victory points, energy cubes to spend on powerful cards, health to hearts to heal your HP, or damage you can deal to other monsters.

During play, monsters will enter the city of Tokyo, gaining additional victory points for every extra round they can remain there. When they’re tired of taking hits from other kaiju, they can opt to leave Tokyo, allowing a rival to rule the roost instead. King of Tokyo is a tense yo-yo of a game, where players race to reach 20 victory points first – but must also avoid losing all their health and being knocked out of play.

Microids promises solo and local multiplayer modes, as well as “dynamic graphics and sound effects” for the digital edition. Pre-orders are live now.

Do you think King of Tokyo is one of the best board games around, or will you be skipping its digital version? Share your opinions in the Wargamer Discord.
