BIEI, Hokkaido—In an area known for hilly agricultural landscapes, a nighttime illumination show is being held at the Shirogane Blue Pond, drawing visitors with its fantastical scenery.
From around sunset until 9 p.m., a slow-paced lighting pattern repeats in 10-minute cycles.
Starting Dec. 17, the lighting pattern will change and use the frozen, snow-covered pond surface as a screen.
The nightly event is aimed at promoting overnight stays within the town among tourists, who usually just drive through Biei.
The light show continues until April 22.
